Melissa Tammen: A Vision Born from Compassion

Melissa Tammen's journey to founding 4Mankind began years ago, when she was working as a barber. During this time, she met a close friend who suffered from severe male incontinence.

"He had such a severe case that he kept contracting UTIs," Melissa recalls. "Each time, he was prescribed antibiotics. But the cycle continued—repeated infections, repeated antibiotics— until his body became resistant to the antibiotics and was overcome with sepsis."

Tragically, he passed away. This devastating loss became the catalyst for Melissa's life's work.

Since then, Melissa has dedicated herself to understanding and solving the challenges of male incontinence management. As she witnessed the same problems in institutional care settings, she saw men—veterans, fathers, grandfathers—receiving care with products that weren't designed for them.

"The traditional approach to incontinence management didn't account for male anatomy," she explains, "leading to frequent skin complications, dignity issues, caregiver frustration, and preventable infections like the one that took my friend's life."

That personal tragedy became a calling. Melissa committed herself to developing a solution that would restore dignity while preventing the complications that had claimed her friend—and continue to affect countless men in care facilities today.

The Problem We Witnessed

In hospitals, nursing homes, and senior living facilities across America, male incontinence management faced significant challenges:

  • Generic products designed for female anatomy  failed to properly capture and contain male urine, leading to leakage and skin exposure
  • Increased rates of skin breakdown including incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) and moisture-associated skin damage (MASD)
  • Caregiver workflow inefficiency with frequent changes, complex positioning, and time-consuming applications
  • Compromised patient dignity from products that didn't fit properly or function as intended
  • Higher costs from increased supply usage, laundry expenses, and treating preventable complications

This wasn't just a product problem—it was a dignity crisis affecting millions of men in institutional care.

The Solution We Built: HUBS

HUBS (Healthcare Universal Barrier System) represents years of research, clinical collaboration, and iterative design refinement.

Working closely with Directors of Nursing, wound care specialists, and frontline caregivers, we developed a male-specific solution that addresses the anatomical and functional needs overlooked by traditional products.

Our patented design features:

  • Anatomically-correct positioning for effective fluid capture
  • Advanced materials that wick moisture away from sensitive skin
  • Simple application process that reduces caregiver time and burden
  • Dignified design that respects patient comfort and autonomy
